SKYLIGHTS NEED ATTENTION, TOO!

SPECIAL ATTENTION SHOULD BE GIVEN TO ANY PENETRATIONS IN YOUR ROOF, PARTICULARLY SKYLIGHTS.

Leaking skylights can lead to structural deterioration and interior damage. This roof had soft spots in the decking around the skylights, an obvious sign of a skylight related failure. The existing skylights were set too low on the roof deck, approximately 3" off of the roof surface, which may be suitable for some climates, but not for Alaska roofs. Ice damming around skylights is a common cold weather issue. We removed the existing skylights, constructed new 2" x 8" curbs, and installed new CrystaLite skylights. The new higher curb profile that we installed will eliminate the issues that contributed to this failure. Curb mounted skylights are the least problematic. Older skylights, as well as low profile skylights, should be inspected periodically to detect problems as early as possible.
